Today, basic details of the new Australian Citizenship Test were released, including a practice version on THIS government website. I slayed the test with a score of 24/25, making me a super Aussie, another mate of mine scored a 21/25 which made him, a bit of an Aussie, but an Aussie none the less. However, my third friend failed. The questions that focused on our government were a little on the difficult side for those of us on the more politically ignorant side of life.

I went a saw a preview of this movie over the weekend, it was after dinner and it was without really much of an expectation. It already had this in it’s favour.

The First Half Hour – Hang in There
The first half hour of the movie was quite slow moving, but at the same time not that easy to follow with scenes that just didn’t seem neccessary. The battle scenes, though spectacular, were a little drawn out and I found my mind drifting. However, I made myself focus, particularly to read the subtitles so I wouldn’t lose the plot.

After the First Half Hour
I was fairly skeptical this far into the movie but I found myself becoming fully absorbed with a firm grasp on the plot. Many strategic moments during the movie had myself and fellow movie goers reacting with shared satisfaction.

This really is an epic tale and John Woo has, as he often does, delivered what has become quite the hit amongst the Chinese and hopefully Australian’s too.

Not Liked by All

There was one member of the group (6 of us) who did not enjoy the movie. He was very tired and may not have focused for those crucial but relatively boring first 30 minutes.

Offical Australian release of Red Cliff is July 23

Overall: 8/10

I want a Leader With Balls

Everything he says and does is a publicity stunt and in order to look well with the Australian people. The words I’ve read have really struck a chord with me. He’s NOT suppose to be our mate, he’s suppose to be our leader.

He is NOT suppose to relate too much with the Australia people because he is suppose to be better then the rest of us. Obama is an elitist and he knows it, he acts like it and he comes across as leader that the American people can feel confident in. Where is ours?

I was fairly excited to see the movie Acolytes, a Horror Film that was doing the rounds at Festivals last year overseas. I’ve loved the horror genre since I was a child and get pretty worked up about new Horror films, especially Australian stuff.

In Melbourne, it’s currently screening for the next few weeks at the cinemas of the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI). Incorporated into the Federation Square complex, these cinemas are comfortable and the screen themselves are digital top notch quality.

My Acolytes Review

Satisfying

One thing I find frustrating about horror movies are their tendancy to create a build up of anticipation and fear for the sake of making the audience jump at a moment that is more of an anti-climax. Don’t get me wrong, Acolytes had its fair share and I do appreciate these sort of scenes in moderation. But what I like about Acolytes was its ability to follow through with more of the intense scenes and moments which otherwise would have been extinguished in more predictable movies

Confusing

I found the plot confusing and I’m still a little unsure about the twist and how it all came together

Humour

There were parts I found humerous. Others have reported the audience laughing at moments in the movie that weren’t suppose to be funny. I was lucky to be in a session with few people and it was free of the movie goers who love to laugh all the way through a horror movie. I kind of hate that, it makes it hard for me to get into the zone

Ending

Confusing plot and twist aside, I very much enjoyed the end of the movie. I wasn’t overly concerned about making sense of it at this point but just enjoyed the scenes, sounds and the eeriness they provoked. I sat through the ending credits thanks to Midnight Juggernauts.

Quick Notes

The filming of suburban Australia, forests and inlets was nicely done

The teenage cast was good, Joel edgerton even better

The attitudes of the teenagers was hard to swallow

A rocking soundtrack

Overall

If you get a chance to watch it in your respective city, go see Acolytes. If you’re lucky enough to watch it in a cinema with very few people it’s even more rewarding or watch it at home in the dark. Confusing and somewhat indulgent without the substance it doesn’t hold up as well as the more mainstream movies Wolf Creek and Rogue

Rating: 6.5/10

Last night, while I was feeding my face with rice, BBQ Chicken wings, Roast Vegetables, followed by cherry pie, an Easter Egg and some chocolate, I managed to catch some of the Biggest Loser Finale.

The Winner Bob Herdsman

An incredible effort from this 57 year old man who was a massive 167 kilograms, losing more then half his body weight to weigh in at a measley 80 kilograms. Whether it’s healthy to lose this much weight in this much time (not according to a majority of nutritionists I believe) or not, is another issue. But I turned to my personal chef for the evening and discussed a potential theory of my own.

The Disintergrating Old People Factor

As we get older, our ability to sustain our muscle takes a big drop and that is one reason why the elderly look and feel old. At Bob’s Age, the way he is looking now is far more indicative of how decrepit we become. Not that I am saying he has lost a tonne of muscle, given his state, it’s obvious he was more fat then muscle, or he would have been a body builder.

Being Old Helped

I’m just saying, when you look at people his age you’re more likely to see the skinny decrepit, shrivelled look he now sports then the the massive obese look he started the show with. I can’t help but wonder if his age then actually worked in his favour, with his bodies natural disposition to disintegrate working in conjunction with the vigorous 3 months of diet and training.

Either way, he won the money!
