Our Forgotten Gems. Kakadu! Northern Territory

Tourists LOVE the “Real” Australia
Recently I have had more and more friends and a family member travel to the Northern Territory. It’s a place that many Australian’s have ignored in the past and not really appreciated its value and potential as a place to visit. As with all places in our own backyard, we tend to take it for granted that it is just there. However, people from Overseas have not. The unique and spectacular diversity of the outbacks offerings have not eluded them with the red centre being seen as the “real Australia” and associated with Australia’s terrain and culture despite our largely metropolitan based population. Overseas visitors flock to Australia, to see “Australia”.
Australians Are Starting To Love Australia More
But finally I find my attention as an Australian, alongside many of my fellow Australians turning to the natural beauty, and the magnitude of this beauty, in our very own backyard. We are maturing and getting beyond the idea of having to travel large distances across oceans for a holiday or journey to be valid.
The wildlife, diverse terrain, breathtaking natural formations and oases (that’s the plural of oasis, I looked it up) is calling me and I want to discover it and experience what others have flocked to Australia to smell, see, feel and breathe for themselves.
Knowing Where To Start
There is a hell of a lot to see and do in the Northern Territory and my ignorance of what is has to offer has just come from having no idea what is there (I hope they’ve pushed educating primary school kids about our red centre these days). So I’ve come across a pretty good blog that’s helped me discover what is in the NT and what I can and should factor into my trip.
Crocosaurus - I have a strong desire to be dangled above the snapping jaws of an Australian Salty. The biggest baddest reptiles in the world.
Uluru – The biggest most spectacular rock in the world. Sacred ground and amazing colors and texture.
Kings Canyon - looks and sounds cool to me!
kakadu National Park – Amazing, amazing, amazing
Katherine Gorge – spectacular. MUST go.
Alice Springs – The real Australia
Litchfield National Park - Waterfalls then those termite mounds – wow. This whole place reminds me of Jurassic park.
Rogue
Another thing that tweaked my interest in NT was the movie Rogue. Pretty good Aussie thriller about some tourists, locals and a mean crocodile. Set in the spectacular Katherine gorge of Nitmiluk Park.
So Where The Hell Am I?
With it’s proximity and cheap domestic flights in this recession there is absolutely no excuse for me to delay this journey for much longer. Northern Territory here I come!
